The anti-aging world ushers in a new face. The world's first clinical study confirms that pomegranate can resist aging
The anti-aging world ushers in a new face. The world's first clinical study confirms that pomegranate can resist aging
Pomegranate is a fruit with a very long edible history, which has a high edible, medicinal and ornamental value. Its application in skin care products and nutrition products has been increasing in recent two years. The main health claims focus on anti-oxidation and anti-aging, and skin care products are more obvious, such as Estee Lauder's red pomegranate series skin care products, and the development of related products in the Japanese and Western European markets is relatively thorough.
The anti-aging effect of pomegranate has been confirmed by experiments in different regions of the world. However, the world's first human clinical trial jointly conducted by Amazentis, a life science company, and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) recently shows that the addition of urolithin A (a metabolite of pomegranate) to the diet has anti-aging benefits, mainly due to its impact on mitochondrial and cellular health.
The world's first clinical trial
This study is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. A total of 60 elderly people and sedentary but healthy people were recruited and randomly divided into four groups. Each group received placebo, or took 250mg, 500mg or 1000mg urolithin A every day for 28 days. The researchers evaluated the role of urolithin A by looking at cellular and mitochondrial health biomarkers in the participants' blood and muscle tissues.
This research has been published in the journal of Natural Metabolism. Urolithin A can slow down this process by improving the function of mitochondria, which are the main source of cell energy. The results showed that urolithin A is safe, has high bioavailability, and can improve the health of human mitochondria and cells.
Importance of intestinal flora
Tannin mainly exists in pomegranate, strawberry, walnut and other fruits and nuts. This substance will be transformed into a molecular urolithin A that can delay muscle cell aging under the action of intestinal microorganisms. Urolithin A has shown in clinical trials that it plays an important application potential in improving mitochondrial health through mitochondrial autophagy and biotransformation, thereby improving human cell health. However, it should be noted that if the intestinal microbes do not contain the necessary microorganisms for the production of urolithin A, no amount of pomegranate will produce this anti-aging molecule.
The study also found that urolithin A is the only compound that can reconstruct the recovery ability of cells to defective mitochondria. In terms of young subjects, this process occurs naturally. However, with the growth of age, the body begins to lose the ability to clear dysfunctional mitochondria, which will lead to sarcopenia (decline in skeletal muscle quality) and other tissue weakness.
Development of related products
Dr. Roger Fielding, deputy director of the Human Anti aging Research Center of Tufts University in the United States, said that there is no effective method to treat age-related decline in muscle function except long-term exercise. This clinical trial is very meaningful because it implies that urolithin A may be a promising solution in managing muscle health and aging.
The raw material used in this study is the patented product of Amazentis, a company derived from the Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, which has a patented leading product, oral urolithin A preparation. The company hopes to commercialize the research results, and has started the research and development of related products. In addition, Nestle Health Sciences recently announced the establishment of a global partnership with Amazentis to develop products containing urolithin A to seek opportunities in consumer health and medical nutrition.
