Botanical Latin name: Equisetum arvense L.

Genus: Equisetum

Plant introduction
Equisetum arvense, an herb whose use dates back at least to ancient Rome and Greece, has been traditionally used to stop bleeding, treat ulcers and wounds, and treat tuberculosis and kidney disease. The name equisetum can be divided into two Latin roots, equus, meaning "horse", and seta, meaning "bristle".
Equisetum still has medicinal value. The stems of the plant contain a large amount of silicone and silicic acid, which help repair fractures and form collagen, an important protein found in connective tissue, skin, bones, cartilage and ligaments. Horsetail is also used to treat urinary tract infections, kidney and bladder stones, and as a topical treatment for burns and wounds.
Functions
1. Diuretic and Kidney Problems
Horsetail is best known for its use as a mild diuretic ("water-draining drug") to increase urination and reduce edema, and as a treatment for a variety of bladder and kidney problems, including kidney stones and bladder infections.
2. Osteoporosis
Horsetail may be effective in preventing osteoporosis.
3. Arthritis and Atherosclerosis
The high silicon content of horsetail may help explain its use in treating arthritis and atherosclerosis, as both joints and arterial tissues contain large amounts of silicon.
4. Brittle Nails
Anecdotal reports suggest that horsetail may be used to treat brittle nails. This may be due to the high content of silicic acid and silicates in horsetail, which provide approximately 2 to 3% elemental silicon.
5. Healing Wounds
Horsetail can be used internally or externally to reduce inflammation and promote wound healing. It is very effective in healing wounds, strengthening connective tissue, and helping to heal bleeding ulcers due to its astringent and hemostatic properties. However, it should be avoided with antihypertensive medications.
