Clinical Discovery: Codonopsis pilosula Extract Helps in the Prevention and Control of Hypertension

All participants were randomly divided into two groups, one group taking 1000 milligrams of Codonopsis pilosula extract daily, and the other group taking a placebo for six weeks.

The research results showed that compared with the placebo group, subjects who received Codonopsis pilosula extract had a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure compared to the baseline level. In addition, although there was no overall difference in diastolic blood pressure between the two groups, a subgroup analysis of first-stage hypertension patients showed that taking Codonopsis pilosula extract could lower the diastolic blood pressure of these subjects compared to placebo.
Among patients classified as stage 1 hypertension, compared with the placebo group, the reduction of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs CRP, an inflammatory marker) and malondialdehyde (a marker of oxidative stress) in the Codonopsis pilosula group was significantly higher than that in the placebo group. Researchers have shown that treatment with Codonopsis pilosula has beneficial effects on both parameters in subjects with stage 1 hypertension, and reduces levels of malondialdehyde and hs-CRP, indicating a decrease in lipid peroxidation and inflammation.
The results of this study indicate that the ability of Codonopsis pilosula extract to prevent disease progression may involve inhibiting the risk of endothelial dysfunction and dyslipidemia in patients with elevated systolic blood pressure, but may involve reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in patients with stage 1 hypertension. That is to say, this extract may be more effective for patients with stage 1 hypertension and can prevent the development of hypertension in pre hypertension patients through different pathways, depending on the different types of systolic blood pressure.
However, further research is needed in the future to identify potential molecular mechanisms.
